Bride and Morris Dancers at Halstead House
From Beyond Words, a series looking back at some of my favourite documentary wedding photography
T his photograph comes from Vikki and Richard’s lovely wedding at Halstead House in Leicestershire, back in 2013. It’s one of those images that has stuck with me ever since. Vikki’s Dad is a Morris Dancer – he’s in the centre of the group holding Vikki aloft – and the couple had decided to have some Morris Dancing during their drinks reception. It made for a wonderful celebratory scene and this image was shot at the crescendo of the final dance.
I think I love it so much due the unique memory of that moment – for me this is still the only time I’ve photographed Morris Dancing at a wedding – and because as documentary wedding photographer, one of things you’re always looking for is to capture is the ‘decisive moment’. For me, this was it. Vikki’s Dad is at the centre of the scene, and the joy in his face needs no explanation, while Vikki’s poise and smile tell us everything about the amazing day she was having. By pure chance, the men either side of her are dressed more or less identically, adding a touch of symmetry to the scene and again, their expressions help convert the euphoria of the moment.
The other thing it reminds me is what a lovely venue Halstead House is. Set in acres of rolling countryside, the elegant Georgian House and converted Victorian barns make for a wonderful location for an English country wedding, so if you’re looking for a venue in Leicestershire, it’s well worth having a look.
Hope you like this image, do let me know what you think…
