Barnsdale Lodge Weddings: Susan and Jethro

Barnsdale Lodge weddings: Susan and Jethro

Everyone has said how great the photos are and many have commented on not having noticed you taking a lot of them because of your unobtrusive style. It was fun looking through them all and seeing what people got up to before we arrived. We love the photos, they really capture the feel of the day, and the photo book is a wonderful keepsake to treasure. Thank you for doing such great job.

Susan and Jethro were married at the fabulous Barnsdale Lodge in Rutland, and from what I saw, had the wedding day of their dreams. The weather was good – warm and slightly overcast – and Barnsdale Lodge made for the ideal location for their intimate and laid-back wedding. Having worked there on a number of occasions now, Barnsdale Lodge is definitely among my favourite Rutland wedding venues. The great thing is that it offers a number of different and equally lovely environments within a relatively small space, making the day varied and fun for guests without having to travel around.

Susan and Jethro’s day started with their guests gathering in the lounge and bar space – the cosy warm colours only added to the bonhomie as friends and family greeted one another. It may seem counter intuitive, but photographing small groups in intimate spaces is often harder than working at larger events – basically keeping a low-profile is more challenging, making it that bit harder to capture natural moments. This is one of the situations where I find having a choice of cameras to use is so advantageous. For the whole of the early part of Susan and Jethro’s wedding my Nikon DSLRs stayed in their bags and I worked with my smaller Fuji X Pro 1 and X100s. Both are small, quiet and extremely stealthy – in other words perfect for this kind of occasion.

The guests then moved over to the banqueting suite, where the front section was set up for the wedding ceremony, with the central area prepared for the wedding breakfast. As his bride entered the room, Jethro’s smile as he looked to his best man was, quite literally a picture…

The ceremony went perfectly, the registrar striking just the right tone to keep things relaxed without loosing the emotional meaning of the big moment…

The scene then changed again, as guests followed the couple to the front of the suite where much hugging and congratulating ensued…

Then it was outside again, this time at the front of the suite where the couple walked out into a hail of confetti…

…before enjoying a glass of Champers or two. Then, it was through the lovely courtyard at Barnsdale Lodge, where the whole wedding party gathered for nibbles, drinks and a lot of excited conversation…

For the (happily quick and stress-free) group photography and a few portraits of the couple, we all moved round to the back of building, where the lovely country views made for a great backdrop…

Finally, the couple and their guests were invited to take their seats in the banqueting suite for the wedding breakfast. One lovely thing I’ve noticed about Barnsdale Lodge is that despite the fact that the suite is a large open space, the staff are great at making use of screens and furniture to change the scale of the seating area, meaning that large and small groups can be accommodated without loosing the intimacy of the occasion.

I had a great time meeting and photographing Susan and Jethro and I’d like to congratulate them again on a fantastic wedding and wish them all the best for the future.
